Manchester United’s goalkeeper is getting into the spirit of giving at the Christmas time, gifted the Watford, with an opening goal in their Premier League match just by allowing Ismaila’s Sarr shot to slip through his hands.
The Manchester United collapsed to a humiliating 2-0 defeat against Premier League bottom side Watford on Sunday after a David de Gea howler, bringing their recent revival to a shuddering halt.
Key moments in the match came in the 50th minute when the De Gea somehow allowed a tame, spinning effort from Ismaila Sarr to creep through his hands and in at the near post.
De Gea has now gone 13 successive Premier League games without having a clean sheet. It’s the biggest run of his career and, just minutes after the mistake, he saw Troy Deeney slam home a penalty past him conceding both shots he had faced on target in the game up to that point.
He could do little about Deeney’s penalty, with the Watford striker smashing the ball past him to double the hosts’ lead and seal all three points after Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought down Sarr.
However, De Gea’s stats do not make for pretty reading.
Since the start of the 2018/19 season, no player has made more errors leafing to goals than the Spain no.1’s six mistakes.
United team have notched up some memorable results against the traditional top clubs in current season by beating Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea, and drawing against Liverpool.
But at the same time they have struggled badly against some of the sides lower down the table, this result could be potentially bad in their bid for a top four spot.
Watford’s win lifts them to 12 points, a level with 19th placed Norwich but still six points from safety.
